Launch of Nurgaziev Canal Modernization in Shakhimardan Irrigation System

On November 10, 2025, large-scale modernization works officially commenced on the Nurgaziev main canal within the Shakhimardan irrigation system in the Kadamjay district of the Batken region. This event marks the beginning of a vital phase in upgrading the region's water infrastructure, aimed at increasing the reliability and sustainability of irrigation services.

This sub-project is being implemented as part of the global Climate Resilient Water Services Project (CRWSP). Funding is provided by the International Development Association (IDA) with the support of the World Bank (Credit No. 7081-KG and Grant No. E009-KG). The project is supervised by the Water Resources Service under the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The modernization of the Shakhimardan system aims to address the deterioration of infrastructure that was originally commissioned in 1978. The primary objectives include:
  • Rehabilitation of the headworks on the Shakhimardan River, including the replacement of worn-out gates and modernization of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Reconstruction and monolithic concrete lining of sections of the Nurgaziev main canal to increase its hydraulic capacity to 9.0 m³/s.
  • Restoration and concrete lining of the Alga on-farm canal, covering approximately 10 km, to reduce filtration losses which currently reach an estimated 50%.
More than 425 million soms have been allocated for this sub-project. The scope of work covers an area providing irrigation water to 4,435 hectares of agricultural land served by three Water User Associations (WUAs): "Ak-Suu Khalmion," "Alga-Jarkoton," and "Jany-Jer Pulgon". Construction is being carried out by the contractor Shandong Zhongze Engineering Group Co. Ltd. (PRC), with the project's completion scheduled for May 8, 2027.

Currently, specialized machinery and personnel are already deployed on-site, with works underway for the demolition of old concrete structures and earthworks. Quality control and construction supervision are being managed by the international consulting firm SU-YAPI Engineering and Consulting Inc.

United Group is taking an active part in the implementation of this strategically important project, acting as a sub-consultant. The company's activities within the CRWSP framework are focused on creating an efficient infrastructure that serves the interests of the agricultural sector and contributes to the economic development of the Batken region and the entire Kyrgyz Republic.
